Libraries

“I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library.”

Jorge Luis Borges

A great library doesn't look installed. It looks like it grew there.

That's the standard we hold ourselves to when we build custom library cabinetry and floor-to-ceiling bookcases for fine homes on the Maine coast. Whether the brief calls for a formal English library with fluted pilasters and crown details, a clean Shaker-style reading room, or a contemporary built-in wall that spans an entire gable end — we build it to feel like it belongs.

Hewes & Company has been crafting architectural built-ins for fifty years. Our craftspeople understand proportion, molding profiles, and how joinery decisions affect the finished look of a room. We work from architect drawings, interior designer concepts, or a conversation at the kitchen table — and we bring the same level of care to a single alcove bookcase as to a full two-story library.

We build in hardwood species including white oak, cherry, walnut, and painted maple. We can match existing millwork in historic homes, replicate period profiles, or work in entirely new design languages. Rolling ladder systems, integrated lighting, concealed doors, and built-in seating are all within scope.

Our library and bookcase work is found in coastal cottages, island retreats, and year-round residences across Hancock County, Knox County, and the islands of Penobscot Bay.

What we build: Floor-to-ceiling bookcases · Library rooms with integrated cabinetry · Window seats with built-in storage · Reading alcoves · Rolling ladder systems · Fireplace surrounds with flanking shelving · Period-matched millwork for historic homes

Planning a library or built-in project? We'd love to hear about it.
