Iain Oughtred Plywood Lapstrake Kits
Iain Oughtred is one of the most influential small-craft designers of the modern era. His glued plywood lapstrake designs — drawn from a deep study of traditional Scottish, Norwegian, and Faeroese boats — have shaped a generation of amateur and professional builders. Oughtred boats are known for their beauty, their seaworthiness, and the satisfaction they bring to anyone who takes the time to build one.
We CNC machine the full Oughtred kit catalog under license, from the diminutive Feather Pram to the Grey Seal cruising yacht. Plans are sold separately by The WoodenBoat Store, with pram dinghies sold through Classic Marine and Stray Dog Boatworks.

A few questions specific to Oughtred kits:
Why are some designs offered with both 6mm and 9mm planking? Oughtred specifies plank thickness based on intended use. The 6mm version is lighter and more responsive — better for rowing performance and easier handling on a beach. The 9mm version is more robust and forgiving, better suited to harder use, heavier loads, or builders who want a longer-lived boat. Both are legitimate choices made by the designer himself.
What's included with the St. Ayles Skiff pricing? Unlike our other kits, the St. Ayles pricing includes the plans and the building rights — this is how the designer and the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association have structured it. The configurations reflect the way many community groups build: shared moulds across multiple boats to spread cost.
Where do I get Oughtred plans? Most are sold by The WoodenBoat Store. The two pram dinghies are sold by Classic Marine and Stray Dog Boatworks.
