Millwork

Architectural millwork refers to custom-made woodwork designed and built for a specific interior or exterior space, such as doors, moldings, paneling, and custom furniture. It's essentially bespoke woodwork that contributes to the overall design and atmosphere of a building.

The difference between a good house and a great one often comes down to what you can't quite put your finger on — the way the crown meets the cornice, the weight of a door casing, the proportions of a wainscot panel. That's millwork. And it's what we've been doing for fifty years.

Hewes & Company produces custom architectural millwork for fine residential construction across coastal Maine. We work with architects and general contractors during the design and specification phase, and with homeowners who are renovating historic structures and need profiles matched to the existing fabric of the house.

Our 20,000-square-foot shop in Blue Hill is equipped for precision milling at any scale. We produce custom crown moldings, door and window casings, baseboards, wainscoting, coffered ceiling components, fireplace surrounds, mantels, stair parts, and custom paneling. For projects with unusual profiles or historic details, we can mill to specification from provided drawings or from physical samples.

We also fabricate and install architectural built-ins — window seats, banquettes, inglenooks, and other integrated elements — that require both the cabinetmaker's and the finish carpenter's eye to execute well.

Our millwork is found in renovated sea captains' houses on the Blue Hill Peninsula, newly constructed architect-designed homes on Mount Desert Island, and island retreats from Deer Isle to Islesboro. If the house deserves it, we can build it.

What we produce: Custom crown molding & cornice profiles · Door and window casings · Wainscoting & paneling · Coffered ceiling components · Fireplace surrounds & mantels · Stair parts & railings · Period-matched profiles for historic renovation · Custom built-in millwork elements
